Hydro-geological framework for lithium tracking

My research addresses the challenges in energy and mineral supply chains, essential for achieving net-zero policies through green technologies such as electric vehicles and renewable energy storage. The study is centered around the escalating demand for lithium, a crucial component in batteries, and the evolution of its extraction methodologies, primarily focusing on the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia. Employing a combination of scientific disciplines, including remote sensing, hydrology and geology, the research aims to develop a systematic, evidence-based model that elucidates the origin of lithium and its environmental migration. Increasing this understanding is crucial to optimise the exploration and extraction processes of lithium in adherence to the growing global focus on sustainably sourced raw materials and green technologies.

Satellites for batteries

I led a ground-breaking study where a synergistic approach leveraging Earth Observation, machine learning and geology has been employed to prospect reserves of battery metals, including lithium from brines. We looked at mineral alterations, vegetation anomalies, and geological faulting as important proxies, establishing interrelationships among these indicators to locate battery metals. Using machine learning helped us understand and use all the input data to find these metals more precisely and reliably. The significance of this study lies in its innovative methodology, focus on sustainability, and contribution to the technological advancements in mineral exploration. Its findings could be instrumental in enhancing the efficiency, accuracy, and sustainability of mineral exploration activities, particularly those related to battery metals crucial for the green technology sector.
